Your pet’s health and happiness depends on the diet you’re feeding them
We all know what it feels like to eat the wrong foods and put on a little weight – the lethargy we experience when we’ve eaten too much, and how we become a little miserable when the scales tell us it’s bad news. However, did you know that eating the wrong foods and gaining weight can have exactly the same effect on your companion as it does on you?
It’s extremely important that your pet is not consuming more calories than they’re burning. Just like humans, pets can put on weight and if they become obese, they can suffer from tiredness and stiff joints. In extreme cases, obesity can lead to serious health conditions such as diabetes and respiratory problems. So it’s your job to keep your pet’s weight in check.
As well as ensuring your companion is eating healthily, they should be doing an appropriate amount of exercise too. This doesn’t have to be a chore however. Long walks in the woods can be great for both you and your dog; why not try making your own jingling toys to tempt your feline to pounce; did you know that rabbits enjoy obstacle courses?
At Eden Vets we never judge pet owners. We’re all guilty of offering our companions the leftovers from a Sunday roast once in a while. However, if you’re ever concerned about your pet’s weight or would like some advice about what to be feeding them, don’t hesitate to get in touch. As well as being able to discuss your pet’s eating and exercising habits with you, our team of experienced vets can also offer bespoke ‘weight watchers’ plans to help keep a close eye on your pet’s waistline.
