Your pet should be visiting the dentist once a year, just like you
Did you know your pet’s teeth are actually very similar to yours? Their baby teeth will fall out, their adult teeth should be cleaned regularly and most importantly, they should visit their ‘dentist’ – their vet – once a year.
It’s estimated that around 80% of pets will experience some form of dental health problem during their lifetime. This statistic is quite scary seeing as the majority of tooth and gum conditions can be easily treated if they’re diagnosed early enough.
If your pet’s teeth aren’t cleaned regularly plaque will begin to build up on them, which in time will lead to yellow/brown tartar and bad breath. Left to develop, tartar can attract other bacteria and cause a number of problems including receding, bleeding or inflamed gums and in extreme cases, tooth loss.
At Eden Vets our team of experienced vets are trained to give advice about how to keep your companion’s mouth as health as possible. We also have the necessary equipment to scale and polish and when necessary, remove teeth. Therefore, if you ever have any questions about your pet’s teeth and gums, please don’t hesitate to speak with a friendly member of our team.
Some top tips to keep your pet’s mouth healthy in between visits to see us include:
- Feeding your pet a dry or partially dry diet. Chewing a hard biscuit acts in an abrasive way and will remove plaque from your companion’s teeth.
- Brushing your pet’s teeth. It’s easier to do this from a young age, but meaty toothpaste often persuades even the most stubborn animals to open wide.
- Giving your pet dental chews. These are specially designed to remove plaque from the teeth and keep bad breath at bay. Make sure you’re not giving your pet these ‘treats’ too often, especially if they’re a little overweight.
